I was born in Comondú, Baja California Sur in 1967. I was two months old when my family moved to Loreto so my father Rafael who was a fisherman could follow the fish along the coast. We travelled up to Conception Bay, Mulege, San Felipe, Guerrero Negro, Santa Rosalia, Loreto with my father until he stopped fishing and moved to El Rosario.
After secondary school, my first job was in accounting and administration, however soon I was working with my uncle Daniel up in Conception Bay as a hookah diver harvesting bay scallops. When I turned 18, I moved to El Rosario and worked at a small factory there where I started diving as a sea urchin diver. A beautiful young woman would come every day to the factory to meet her father. Soon, we began talking with each other. Her name was Margarita and after a year's engagement, we married and spent 9-years in El Rosario where our daughters Alejandra and Itza were born.
I was suffering from compression sickness because I was spending too much time on the sea floor. We moved to Loreto so I could return to fishing but the area had just been named a marine park so the fishing option was no longer available. I began working at the Trojas Hotel and one week after I started, the manager quit and I took over his job. The year I spent at the hotel helped me learn English, however with addition of Perla, our youngest daughter, I also worked double shift as a salesperson at Loreto Center Dive Shop. On too many occasions, the divemaster would never show up and it was left to me to take the customers out. With just an open water certificate but plenty of diving experience, I soon took over the job as divemaster. Bruce Williams, Susan Speck and Javier Lopez were also working with Loreto Center and soon they invited me to join them as they began a new diving outlet called the Dolphin Dive Center.
I have been with Bruce and Susan for nearly ten years now. They graciously trained me for advanced open water, rescue and divemaster certifications and I have been happily with them ever since.
